The short answer

What is managed IT for a manufacturing business?

Liverpool, NSW South Yarra, VIC

Managed IT for a manufacturer covers the office and production-side technology a factory relies on, including the PCs and servers that run production software, backups, patching and cybersecurity, for a fixed monthly fee. Sharktech adds Flagman AI machine safety and Business Intelligence production dashboards, delivered by one Australian team.

Office and production

PCs, servers, backups and patching on both sides of the factory.

Data to decisions

Business Intelligence dashboards from your line data.

Manufacturing is where IT, operations and safety collide. The same network carries email, ERP and the machines on the floor. The same supervisor is accountable for output and for every worker's hands. Treating these as separate problems is why so many factories carry risk they cannot see. Sharktech Global is an Australian AI tech lab, the Sharktech AI Tech Lab, with offices in Liverpool, New South Wales and South Yarra, Victoria. We design, build and run our own AI platforms, so the systems we deploy for you are ones we understand from the inside. We support manufacturing businesses across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Newcastle, Wollongong and Geelong.

Why it matters

Why is safety technology now a priority in manufacturing?

Transport, postal and warehousing and manufacturing are among the six industries that account for most work-related deaths in Australia.

188

Australian workers killed at work in 2024.

42%

Of worker fatalities involved vehicle incidents, the leading cause.

80%

Of fatalities occurred in six industries, including transport, postal and warehousing, and manufacturing.

146,700

Serious workers compensation claims in 2023 to 2024, each with at least one week off work.

One partner, four capabilities

What does Sharktech manage for manufacturers?

Use one capability, or bring them together under one agreement. Everything connects, because we build software as well as support it.

Problem and solution

How is Sharktech technology making a difference in manufacturing?

Real problems. Working technology. Numbers you can check.

The six problems we hear most from manufacturers, what we do about each one, and the number you track to know it worked.

The problem

Hands near blades, rollers and presses

Roller and saw machines cause hand injuries and finger lacerations, and many older machines have no way to stop themselves when a hand gets too close.

How Sharktech solves it
Flagman safety automation

Flagman creates a No Hand Zone around the machine. When AI cameras detect a hand in the hazardous area, a rule-based safety action halts the machine through relay outputs, with visual and audible alerts to the operator.

What you measure

Hand intrusion events per machine, stoppages triggered, injuries avoided over the baseline

The problem

Guarded areas entered without authorisation

Physical guarding is bypassed, and unauthorised entry into cells and machine areas is only discovered after an incident.

How Sharktech solves it
Flagman safety automation

Virtual detection zones are drawn in the Flagman dashboard. Intrusion triggers sirens, lights or machine stoppage, and Flagman talks to your PLCs over Modbus and ProfiNet so it fits your existing automation.

What you measure

Intrusions per zone, time to stop, auditable event log

The problem

Office IT and the factory floor on one flat network

If ransomware gets into the office, a flat network lets it reach the production floor. That is when a cyber incident becomes a stopped line.

How Sharktech solves it
Cybersecurity

We run a security health check against the Essential Eight, penetration test the internal and external network, and advise on separating office systems, cameras and production equipment, working with your network provider.

What you measure

Essential Eight maturity, critical findings closed and retested

The problem

Production data trapped in spreadsheets and machine screens

Output, scrap and downtime are recorded, but they sit in ERP exports and whiteboards, so decisions are made on last week's numbers.

How Sharktech solves it
Data and AI

We connect ERP, production and quality data into Business Intelligence dashboards for output, scrap, downtime reasons and OEE, with clear metric definitions and access controls.

What you measure

Report preparation time, downtime visibility by line and shift

The problem

PPE non-compliance you cannot evidence at audit

You know hard hats and vests are skipped on some shifts, but you have no reliable record to act on or to show an inspector.

How Sharktech solves it
Flagman safety automation

Flagman monitors helmet and vest compliance in real time, alerts supervisors immediately and categorises violations by equipment, camera location or department for audits and training.

What you measure

PPE compliance rate by department, violations closed out

The problem

Unplanned downtime from ageing PCs and unpatched systems

The PC running the production software is often the oldest machine in the building, with no backup and no patching plan.

How Sharktech solves it
Managed IT

We inventory every device, patch and monitor what is safe to patch, back up production software and configurations, and plan hardware replacement before it fails.

What you measure

Devices monitored, backup success rate, IT-caused downtime

Advanced safety automation

What is Sharktech Flagman, and how does it automate safety?

Your cameras already see the risk. Flagman acts on it in real time.

Flagman is an AI vision safety system that turns your cameras into a safety team that never looks away. It detects people, vehicles, PPE and hazards in real time, sounds local alerts, triggers machine and vehicle controls, and records every event for your work health and safety reporting. Sharktech is the exclusive Australian and New Zealand delivery partner for Perleybrook Labs, the developer of Flagman, and installs, integrates and supports every Flagman deployment locally.

FAQ FAQ

Managed IT for manufacturing: frequently asked questions

How much do managed IT services cost for a manufacturer?

Sharktech managed IT starts from A$3,500 per month for a manufacturing site, scoped by users, devices and systems after a site assessment. Flagman machine safety, penetration testing and Business Intelligence dashboards are quoted as separate fixed-scope projects so you can start with the biggest risk first.

Can Flagman stop a machine automatically?

Yes, Flagman has relay outputs and supports Programmable Logic Controllers over Modbus and ProfiNet. When a person or hand is detected in a defined danger zone, it can trigger sirens, lights or a machine stop. Integration is designed with your maintenance team and engineering contacts during the site assessment.

Is Flagman a replacement for physical machine guarding?

No, Flagman is an additional layer that detects people and hands in hazardous areas, alerts, stops and records. Physical guarding, lockout procedures and your risk assessments under work health and safety law remain in place. Flagman gives you the evidence to show they are working.

Will cybersecurity testing disrupt production?

Testing is scoped and agreed in writing before it starts, including timing and which systems are in scope. Production equipment can be excluded or tested in a planned window. We tell you in advance about anything that could cause disruption.

What production data can you put into Business Intelligence?

Most ERP, MES, quality and spreadsheet sources can be connected. Typical dashboards cover output, scrap, downtime reasons and OEE by line and shift, plus Flagman safety events by machine. We start with a data audit to agree definitions before we build.

How does the Flagman hardware cope with a factory environment?

The Flagman Neo edge device uses a rugged, fanless aluminium enclosure rated IP69K, operates from minus 20 to plus 80 degrees Celsius and draws under 20 watts. It processes video on site with no cloud connection required.
